Interesting discussion. The most important thing to keep in mind when handling the characters of any given fanfic is it does not at all matter how the characters were portrayed in the canon. What does matter is how you want to portray the characters and what type of portrayal will attract the most readers. It's your fanfic after all, and thus, the characters are yours to mold into any shape you want.
