Why did the compromise fail in 1860-1861?

By this time, the fuse was already going. In fact, that fuse had been running for a long time. All the previous compromises did was buy time before the actual explosion. This stage in the game, the hot heads and politicians have created such a fury in each division of America that war was coming one way or another. The compromise just could not hold the nation together any longer.
