Why is HaShem doing this to his Treasured People (Sons of Israel)?

Because conversion to either the necrolatry of Europe or rabbed misology of the middle-east would have lowered the Jews to the level of their cruel neighbours. It took enormous strength of character to withstand, and continue to withstand, such cruelty. What does this say of the oppressors?
